Planting the seed of democracy in a region which has only known totalitarian regimes. At least that is the idea.

Hmmm. The reason given for war was WMD. Al Qaeda connections in Iraq. The possible transfer of WMD to terrorist groups. No mention was ever made of bringing democracy to the ME as a reason for the war. Later that reason was added to the growing quiver of reasons for war.

So it was not the idea. It is the morphed reason for war.

I don't think that war was needed to plant the seed of democracy. In fact tilling the soil with bombs may spoil the opportunity for a seed of democracy, as most intelligence now points to a growing insurgency. Violence is on the increase.

Democracy will not come to Iraq as a result of the war. Democracy will come to Iraq as a result of the people of Iraq accepting and taking on democracy for themselves. It cannot be achieved at the end of a gun barrel.
