It is ironic that the French are not truly responsible for a portion of the one great resource they have. The Alliers and Nevers oak forests that provide the tannic backbone for French wines are a result of their unrealized flirtation as a naval power. The Bordeaux region was a swamp until a Belgian engineering firm was hired to drain it. (Would the enviro whackos be upset if they did that today?) The French can claim the research by Friar Dom Perignon that made Champaign great. The first popular Bordeaux, Ho Brian, was developed by a British pub owner.
