I think it really doesn't fracture society to let people do there own thing socially. In fact, I think people are more likely to be happy if they have more freedom, rather than less, when it comes to social choices. I do not think the economic choice to fail absolutely (and to slide in to disease, starvation, or degradation) is a choice that makes society "better" (imo). I know that libertarians argue that it helps to encourage people not to fail- but having travelled all over the world, I have to tell you that even when the penalty for failure is draconian, there are people who fail, and who fall. I much prefer those countries where the social nets are compassionate, to the places where they are not. Because I want a nice social safety net, I feel that makes me socialistic economically, since there is no viable way to pay for a good safety net without the government.
Being libertarian socially, but socialistic economically gives me exactly the kind of world I want to live in. That's why. We all build try to build our political systems based on the kind of world we want to live in- and many of us want very different kinds of worlds. It is also true that many people do not understand, or have not thought about, the effect the policies they champion would have on society. |
