BEIRUT, 15 March 2005 — Over one million opposition backers chanted “Freedom, Sovereignty, Independence” and unfurled a huge Lebanese flag in central Beirut yesterday,

I had a hernia repair operation yesterday and the doctor was Lebanese. He came in to check on me when this protest was on the TV, and the pride and joy in his eyes were impressive. He said this was the biggest demonstration in the history of Lebanon, and was clearly excited about the possibility of the Syrians finally leaving. When I asked him who were the pro-Syria protesters from a few days earlier, he said they were mainly Palestinians, Syrian laborers and Lebanese that are essentially mafia type living off the graft that come from Syrian wealth. The average person in Lebanon wants Syria out (which makes sense to me).
