In most states (possibly even every state) and in the country at large a majority of the population is against same-sex marriage.

You sure about that? Most of us don't even know the difference between a same sex marriage (which outrages a lot of people) and a same sex civil union (which is fine with a lot of people) other than the word 'marriage'. If a same sex civil union is entitled to all the benefits in these mysterious same sex marriages, what's the big deal? I don't even understand, to tell you the truth.

I'd say its more likely that in most of the US the majority doesn't give a damn about gay couples, and its the feisty minority that gets in an uproar.
