In the example you give its more like democracy, such a hard concept for the Democratic party to get. It was the GOP, not the democrats. And the reason I said that is because constitutional amendments are meant to expand our freedoms, not to contract them. The Constitution is about guaranteeing our rights. Of course, you would use it to restrict those rights in some way for some group. That's why I say the GOP has trouble understanding the nature of a democracy. In most states (possibly even every state) and in the country at large a majority of the population is against same-sex marriage. Just as in some states prior to 1860 a majority believed slavery was a good thing. The majority does not always know what's right. Its why we have judges. You might justify it on another principle besides democracy. You can try to argue that a right is being violated and that even if a democratic majority doesn't want same-sex marriage we have to allow it anyway, but to bash the GOP on this for not understanding or being responsive to democracy is just silly. Wait one ridiculous minute. The only reason the constitutional amendment issue is coming up AGAIN is because CA is saying the gay marriage restriction is unconstitutional [in CA]. Forget that gay marriage may work in CA even though it may not work anywhere else. The right just can't stand to have one of its morality plays contested......to whit, see DR's reaction to teenagers having sex. So now, its going to try for a constitutional amendment even though some of your damn attorneys are telling you the amendment would not be constitutional. Stupid is as stupid does! And you wonder why I say the GOP has trouble with the concept of democracy. ted
