Afghan boy who underwent heart surgery in good condition

March 15, 2005 (Indianapolis) — Doctors say a 15-month-old Afghan boy who underwent heart surgery last week in Indianapolis is recovering and has a big appetite.
Qudrat Wardak is expected to be released from the Heart Center at Riley Hospital for Children in a few days. Doctors expect he'll be able to go home to Afghanistan by the end of the month.

Doctors operated on him for about six hours last Tuesday to move the blood vessels in his heart to the proper place.

Doctors say Qudrat still has a tiny hole between two chambers in his heart, but it should close on its own.

U-S Army medics first diagnosed the boy's heart problem during an exam at a refugee camp in Afghanistan.
