ShinWon to Sell Digital Sat. Receivers in Europe

SEOUL -- ShinWon Industry Co., Ltd. said it is gearing up
to sell digital satellite-broadcasting receivers in Europe.

It signed an export contract with France's Aston Corp. in 1996, and
the company has completed trial production procedures for such sales.

After its initial shipment to France, which is valued at US$70 million,
ShinWon plans to expand exports to other European countries, and to
Asia and the Middle East. The company maintains a large production
line for such products at its Hapteok plant.

ShinWon said it developed its MPEG 2-type satellite receivers in
cooperation with Aston. The products are the first of their kind in
Korea to use the V chip-like function that blocks violent and
sexually-explicit scenes from television programs.

The company said it plans large-scale marketing efforts for exports to
the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia. Those regions have the
same European-type standard for satellite receivers.
