RE: "I use my hometown, the farming community of Yamhill, Ore., as my touchstone for the heartland, and I have a hard time imagining that she could do well there. Ambitious, high-achieving women are still a turnoff in many areas, particularly if they're liberal and feminist. "

America is still backwards.

Five years of the Bush administration has made it very clear to me how patriarchal and yes, backwards we really are.

Guess who is going to fix America's image with Muslims - Karen Hughes - she's back:

"Hughes, a 48-year-old Texan who played a crucial role in the rise of George W. Bush from professional baseball executive to the presidency, was tapped to become the new undersecretary of public diplomacy

....charged with turning that tide and improving America's image abroad.
....burgeoning anti-American sentiment in the Muslim world "
....Though she lacks diplomatic experience and expertise in the Muslim or Arab world

A joke........a complete and utter joke. They think because there is an appearance of progress in the ME they can do whatever and it will be a brilliant move. Within the year, I bet Bush makes her Secretary of State.
