Iraq Legislators Vow to Uphold Democracy -AP

By PATRICK QUINN, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two years after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Iraqi legislators were sworn in Wednesday as members of the 275-seat National Assembly, vowing to uphold freedom and democracy. But before taking their oath, they had to endure mortar barrages and wailing air raid sirens as insurgents made their presence felt.

Afghan leader makes his presence feel at Indian conclave on 24th Feb,2005, a forgotten nation emerges from ashes of self annihilation!

..

HIS EXCELLENCY, MR. HAMID KARZAI
President of Afghanistan

Hamid Karzai, a Keynote Speaker at the Conclave is the face of post-Taliban Afghanistan. Born into privilege and politics, Karzai was part of the Mujahideen Resistance against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan but became disillusioned of their growing extremism after the Soviets left. Karzai traveled across the world, rallying support against them. When the Taliban was toppled a year later, Karzai became a natural choice to lead Afghanistan through a transitional phase. Karzai was elected President in a landslide during June's loya jirga, or grand council in December 2001. His rule was legitimised when he won the official election which took place in Afghanistan last October. Hamid Karzai represents the best hope to bring peace to Afghanistan and unite its various tribal factions.
