There is insufficient refinery capacity on our West Coast to handle ANWR type oil... and it would cost far too much to transport it by tanker to our Gulf Coast where we *do* have ample refinery capacity to handle it --- so much of any new ANWR oil to come on the markets will be exported to Japan and China and South Korea on tankers... and the US markets will be left to increasingly rely upon oil from less politically stable regions like Africa and the Middle East, etc.

If it was really about promoting 'US energy security' more then oil company profits we would have ACCEPTED the generous offer from Canada of FREE right-of-way for a pipeline to our upper-midwest... and from there a multitude of large pipelines connect cheaply to our Gulf Coast refineries.

(Once oil is loaded on a tanker, it can travel the world to sell where ever the best price if offered... but oil in a pipeline goes from point A to point B. If the terminus of a new pipeline were in America then ALL the oil would be sold in the American market...)
