Motorola's Zander Says Apple Concerns Put ITunes-Capable Mobile Phone on Hold

CHICAGO (AP) -- Motorola Inc.'s last-minute decision to indefinitely postpone an announcement about its iTunes phone resulted from concerns voiced by Apple Computer Inc., according to the mobile-phone manufacturer's chief executive.
Motorola briefed reporters last week on the much-hyped new phone, which would allow users to download music from Apple's iTunes Internet music store, and was set to unveil it during a consumer electronics show in Germany. It pulled back the announcement for reasons never fully explained, amid analyst speculation the delay was due to reservations among its carriers.

Ed Zander, CEO of Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola, said at a briefing during a wireless industry trade show in New Orleans on Tuesday that Apple CEO Steve Jobs didn't want the phone announced now because it wouldn't be on the market for a few more months.

He said Apple typically announces new products right before consumers can buy them, while cell-phone companies usually tout upcoming products months ahead of time at large industry trade shows.

"We were doing it (the announcement) the old way," Zander said.
