DEARBORN, Mich. (Dow Jones)--Ford Motor Co. (F) said it will boost 2005 production of its new Mustang model by more than 70%, citing a 45%-plus increase in retail sales for the model year thus far, compared to a year earlier.

The model year thus far includes sales for October through February. Ford's retail sales excludes fleet sales. Ford introduced its new Mustang model in fall. Ford introduced the model in 1964 and since April of that year, it has sold more than 8 million Mustangs worldwide.

In a press release Thursday, Ford said it will increase Mustang production by more than 80,000 units. In 2005, the motor company expects to produce more than 192,000 Mustangs.

In calendar 2004, overall Mustang sales fell 7.5% to 129,858 Mustangs from 140,350 Mustangs a year earlier.

For all of 2004, sales fell 4.4% to 3.33 million vehicles from 3.48 million a year ago.
