I don't know what this number is and what set of assumption this is based on.

The goal is to set on a transition course that will reduce, and maybe one day eliminate the unfunded liability. It is bound to have some cost associated with it, that will need to be met by a combination of borrowing, tax increases and benefit cuts.

The current deficit is made to look better because of the "unified" budget adopted in the 60's, that included SS surpluses in the general funds. A shell game to make the budget look better for the Vietnam war.

Well, sucks. And Senate just apparently voted down even the small reductions of spending that Bush proposed.

It seems that we are moving to near bankruptcy, where some unelected financial control board will take over the spending power from the US Congress, as it happened in New York City some decades ago.
