Where I live both parties have always done their best to buy all the votes they can on election day. I'm sure it goes on everywhere. If there isn't some way to guarantee that the person who sends a ballot in isn't the one who picked the choices it would create a bigger problem than the one it is supposed to solve.

The electronic voting terminals are here to stay. The thing is we need a way to make them more foolproof. The way it is right now they are foolproof but not foolproof in the sense that the person who gets the most votes wins. They are foolproof in the sense that the republicans can manipulate the vote to give any result they want.

The proposal I hear most about is a printout but I don't think that would be foolproof either. The only idea I have is for each person who uses a voting terminal (or whose paper ballot is counted by machine) is for that person to be given (or sold for a nominal amount like a dime or quarter) a paper ballot to take away from the precinct after they are done voting. The voter would have to fill out their own paper ballot as they punch the electronic screen. Each person would be given a serial number from the voting terminal which they would write down on their paper ballot. A few days after the election the government would be required to place every person's ballot online for them to check themselves. They would do this by entering the number the machine gave them and comparing the results online with what they had written down on their paper ballot.

It would not be required to fill out the paper ballot, it would only be for people who wanted to check and see if their ballots had been counted correctly. If a person didn't want to record every vote they could still write down their serial number and look at the results online.

I'm sure anyone who knows much about elections could find faults with this system and ways to either improve it or better ideas. This is just something I was thinking about. Something has to be done. The way it is we are headed for a one party state and that one party will be headed by a dictator. We aren't far away from that now.
