Yes it is against the law to buy votes. If it wasn't you would see politicians bidding for peoples votes right out in the open. The guy with the most money behind him would be elected almost every time.

I don't know if they still do it this way or not but a long time ago around here the people who would buy votes would pick the person up, drive them to the polls, give them a ballot already filled out and have them bring the blank one they were given inside back to them.

A friend of mine who is a republican used to help them count votes after every election. He told me that he would break off the tip of a pencil and hide it under his fingernail. Then whenever they ran across a ballot that wasn't completely filled out they would finish it for the voter who didn't fill it out. I was a republican at the time or I doubt he would have told me this. Both parties will cheat any way they can to get one of their men elected. I guess you already knew this though.
