This mess of carriers subsidizing phones and then demanding their piece of all phone transactions, such as music downloads, in return for supporting a phone sounds to me like an antitrust violation, possibly an illegal tying arrangement. If true that they can stifle an innovation like the the iPod phone, then what prevents carriers from stopping other important technologies like non-centralized voice recognition to make it easier to use your mobile phone while you are driving?
