Philips demonstrates how mobile multimedia can be made simple at CTIA Wireless 2005

Nexperia Cellular System Solutions offer consumers easy access to multimedia applications anytime, anywhere

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) is showcasing a range of mobile multimedia semiconductor technologies and solutions that will make it simple for consumers to connect to information, services and entertainment at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) Wireless 2005 Show in New Orleans this week. Whether people are at home or on the go, they want access to voice and multimedia services via easy-to-use mobile phones.

Philips will feature a number of its Nexperia™ Cellular System Solutions including a new Unlicensed Mobile Access (UM A) reference design allowing seamless switching from cellular networks to WLANs, an interactive TV-on-mobile solution that allows consumers to purchase advertised goods as they are shown, an advanced EDGE mobile phone solution that bridges the gap to 3G, a smartphone solution with high-speed Internet connectivity, and Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled mobile phones to validate secure connections that will help to change the way people shop and enjoy entertainment services in real time.

UMA-enabled mobile phone
Philips will be introducing a complete UMA reference design to make it easy for mobile handset manufacturers to bring UMA-enabled phones to their customers. The new UMA reference design creates a blueprint for a mobile phone that accesses GSM and GPRS mobile services through traditional cellular networks to be able to automatically switch over to WLAN access points. The UMA capability gives mobile phone customers added flexibility for advanced phone services, as their phones are able to detect the fastest and most cost-effective network without interruptions. If a phone is taken out of the WLAN range, it seamlessly switches back to the cellular network.

Interactive mobile TV
Philips will demonstrate one of the industry's most comprehensive TV-on-mobile solutions based on the Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) standard for live TV, movies and music. By using advanced System-in-a-Package (SiP) technology, Philips is able to deliver a complete, fully functional digital TV receiver small enough to fit inside a mobile phone. Philips' solution also extends low-power capabilities, which allow consumers to watch TV for more than 10 hours on a 1000mAh mobile phone battery before needing to recharge their phones.

UMTS/EDGE Nexperia system solution
Philips will also feature its UMTS/EDGE Nexperia Cellular System Solution 7130 that delivers seamless transition between 3G/W-CDMA, 2.75G/EDGE and 2.5G/GPRS cell phone networks for optimum quality of service. This solution enables operators to offer an easy user experience across networks irrespective of 3G deployments. In addition, Philips' expertise in low-power design ensures that the Nexperia 7130 solution maximizes the battery life of advanced mobile phones.

Smartphones
Addressing the growing volume of smartphones and narrow time-to-market windows, Philips will showcase its Nexperia Cellular System Solution 9000 family. Running on the open source Linux operating system (OS), Philips' complete smartphone system solution includes an application engine dedicated to sophisticated multimedia functions, a telecom modem, and a broadcast and connectivity subsystem. It also incorporates high-speed connectivity to the Internet, enabling consumers to download music, play 3-D games and watch digital television, even while receiving calls.

NFC-enabled cell phones
Striving to further simplify people's lives, Philips will demonstrate the easy transfer of information between electronic devices and fast access to services via NFC technology embedded into Samsung and Nokia mobile handsets. With NFC, the mobile handset becomes a wallet, ticket and digital rights management device to securely store and share information. Philips will show how easy it is to purchase a movie by downloading a URL to a mobile handset from an RFID tag embedded in a poster. The URL then connects the mobile phone to the Web site of the content provider via which the user can buy the rights to the movie. The rights are then transferred from the phone so that the movie can be viewed on an NFC-enabled TV.
