To wish my coworkers Merry Christmas would be ignorant. They are Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Hindu, Atheist, Pagan and Buddhist. Almost everyone celebrates winter solstice in some form, so Happy Holiday or Season's Greetings is perfectly acceptable and considerate of everyone.

I have changed my mind about that based on some discussions I had over the holidays on SI. Consider this: just about everyone celebrates Christmas in some form or fashion, even if it's just getting a day off from work to put one's feet up or to practice some other religion. It is a national holiday, after all. It seems reasonable to me to say "Merry Christmas" to a colleague as the two of you duck out of the office early on Christmas Eve regardless of your religion is his. I have concluded that it borders on churlish to criticize Christians for saying "Merry Christmas" to non-Christians within a few days of a national holiday with that name.

That's not to say I've gone over to the dark side and advocate "Merry Christmas" signs on department stores at Thanksgiving rather than the more inclusive "Happy Holidays." I have just changed my attitude that it is rude, or ignorant, in every case to say "Merry Christmas" to a non-Christian.
