Yes...You can still get birth records from the County Clerk of most States....Just have to send the required amount...check to see if they have copies, or do they have to be certified...for this venture, you won't need a certified copy. Just explain your relationship. Check out Google: States Birth and Death Records....

Also, if the person is deceased, and you know where they are buried...you might write or call the Sexton of the cemetery where they are buried...Sometimes all it takes is a small donation --$2-$3 or so--and they will send you a copy of the burial orders. Not as costly as a death certificate, and much the same or better info...
