A very good reason would be if he truly loved her and didn't want to leave her in this horrible vegetative state"

It is often very difficult to tell from what a persons says from how a person really feels. It is that much more difficult if a person can no longer communicate.

My guess is that all living things want to live and fight to live until their last breath.

Several weeks ago, my 17 year old cat died. It wasn't until 2 or 3 days before he collapsed that I noticed something wrong. He would climb on to my lap in the evenings and sit there and purr for hours. This was much longer than normal and he was noticeably less alert.

When he collapsed, I called the vet (animal hospital), but they didn't have a vehicle availabe to pick him up. So I put him in a blanket and carried him to the vet in my arms. Up until the very last minute, he was telling me he wanted to get up and move about again.

He died in my arms on our way to the vet. No way he wanted to die.

I suspect that is the way with all living things in nature.
