As important as a living will, he said, is the legal designation of someone to make decisions for you if you can't because a living will can't cover every possible circumstance. The power of attorney spells out who can make decisions and what decisions can be made, and those decisions must be respected, he said.

I have not seen The Power of Attorney discussed here.

The three documents we have had prepared are:

A Will
A Living Will. We used the 5 wishes format.
A Durable Power of Attorney

As explained to me, the three documents work together to:
1. Distribute my assets the way I want and with minimum government interference.
2. Provide someone I choose (rather than a court designated party or court decision) to make decisions on my behalf especially if I become incapacitated.
3. Provide clear unambiguous instructions to my caregivers about my wishes regarding ordinary and extraordinary health care measures in the event of a catastrophic illness, injury or imminent death.

We are now reviewing these documents for the first time in over 5 years and found only one small change we wish to make. Otherwise we are quite satisfied and pleased with our initial choices. It is a relief to us to know that the documents are done. I believe our families will be relieved that we made those difficult but critical decisions for ourselves.
