Never is US history have we celebrated the Winter Solstice. <<Why should atheists not be able to celebrate and get paid for the time off like everyone else?>> Because they don't believe in a religion which is the very foundation of the time off. If American business operated the way you're suggesting we'd all get EVER religious holiday off regardless of belief and a few New Years as well. That just doesn't work.
