John DeLorean designed the original "muscle cars" in the 60's. Essentually he took a 1964 Pontiac Tempest and fitted it with a 389 ci V8 and called it the GTO. Other GM lines got a similar car; Buick (gran sport), Oldsmobile 442, Chevy Chevelle SS 396. By 1969 they had hit their heyday...all with 400 ci engines (Chevelle still had a 396, and the 442 was offered with A 400 later a 455) and 360 hp or better.
1/4 mile times were under 14 seconds out of the show room.

In the early seventies it was over...emission controls killed them along with the arab oil enbargo in 1973.

Later Delorean started the Delorean car company in Ireland which made the stainless steel car you see in back to the future.

Later Delorean was indicted for supposedly making a $24M cocaine deal to keep the company going but was aquitted at trial.
