Thanks for the link. The numbers of stars are so huge that it is incomprehensible to us mere earthlings. Who is to say? I actually think the number of civilizations out there must number in millions, but I'm equally confident that we'll never come in physical contact with them.

The video "The Privileged Planet" held that only a star sequestered safely in a less densely populated portion of a spiral arm of a galaxy could produce an earthlike planet, because stars in the center of the galaxy would have too much radiation, and stars in denser parts of the spiral would have too much light. There were dozens of factors, all of which had to be correct. Still, as you say, with the number of stars in the universe there must be thousands or millions of inhabited planets. I hope we find out without actually meeting those aliens. I don't see how it could turn out well for us.

Did you see the movie Contact with Jodie Foster? It was based on the novel of the same title by Carl Sagan. I loved the way the aliens communicated their intelligence with a series of prime numbers. The book was pretty good too.
