I don't think it's negative that black people hold on to their identity as blacks. American blacks are admired and emulated throughout the world.

There is a unique bond there too. I remember being in a restaurant once with a friend who is black. While we were sitting there the waiter showed a customer to his table, the customer was a black guy. As they walked past us my friend and the new customer nodded a greeting to each other. As far as I could tell they were the only two black people in the room. Now if that had been a room full of black people and I was the only white guy and a white customer walked by my table, I don't believe I would have nodded a greeting simply because he was white.

That guy wound up joining us and we had a very pleasant two hour lunch. :)
