UQM Technologies Receives Additional Order From Carnegie Mellon for Two UQM(R) Generators to Provide Power for the 'Spinner' Hybrid Electric Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle
Tuesday March 22, 8:30 am ET
- Generators Will Be Integrated With a Small Diesel Engine on Two Additional Hybrid Electric UGCV's Being Built by Carnegie Mellon-Led Team Under a Follow-on Contract From DARPA; the Generators Increase the Company's Content on Each Unmanned Robotic Combat Vehicle Beyond the Six UQM(R) High Torque Wheel Mounted Propulsion Systems Propelling Each 'Spinner' UGCV

FREDERICK, Colo., March 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. (Amex: UQM - News), a developer of alternative energy technologies, announced today that it has received an order for two UQM® generators that will provide generated power for two additional "Spinner" hybrid electric unmanned ground combat vehicles being built by a team led by the National Robotics Engineering Consortium, a unit of Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute. The UQM® generators will be integrated with a small diesel engine to generate the power required by the two additional unmanned ground combat vehicles (UGCV's) which are propelled by high torque wheel-mounted UQM® propulsion motors. The UQM® generators replace a small turbine generator used in an earlier version of the UGCV, increasing the Company's product content on each hybrid electric UGCV. The UGCV platform is an advanced technology demonstrator that complements the Army's Future Combat System networked system environment of manned and unmanned ground and airborne weapon systems with superior levels of mobility and reduced logistic needs.

John Bares, the program's Principal Investigator at Carnegie Mellon said, "We have been thrilled with the consistent performance of the UQM® motors and solid customer support offered by UQM Technologies. The availability of diesel fuel on the battlefield drove our decision to change to a diesel engine based power generation configuration on the UGCV and power dense UQM® generators were the obvious choice to be integrated with our small diesel engine. The performance and durability of UQM® products, which have now undergone hundreds of hours of field testing in the UGCV, have exceeded our expectations and are a core reason for Spinner's excellent mobility and performance characteristics."

"We are extremely pleased that Carnegie Mellon has selected our power dense generator to provide generated power for the UGCV increasing our product content per vehicle to seven UQM® high power systems. The UQM® propulsion motors deliver peak torque of 380 Nm, which allows this 8.5 ton vehicle to scale stationary obstacles 3 1/2 feet in height, traverse ditches over 5 feet wide and deliver their rated peak torque in either a forward or reverse direction on demand. The ability of our propulsion motors to perform when mounted directly in the wheels of a vehicle, where they experience extremely high loads due to shock and vibration in this rugged and demanding operating environment, together with the small footprint of our 75Kw generator once again demonstrates the durability and packaging advantages of our power dense motor and generator products", said William G. Rankin, President and Chief Executive Officer of UQM Technologies, Inc.
