I'm more interested in the new generation of diesels from VW and I think Jeep is going to or does offer one on it's Liberty -- mileage nearly as high as a Prius but without the extra 10k for the batteries. Ideally, there will be a compromise with hybrids (regenerative brakes, solar on the roof) and efficient engines.

For the meantime, I put $1500 repairs into my 14 y.o. Mazda Navajo (3500 miles a year) and continue to bike to work.
