Ah ha! I hear ya now. The application I use is using range and not true range. But your question is still valid. With futures maybe we should use true range. So far, I've found that the support and resistance levels have been acurate (using the range) for futures.
My only problem is deciding if the index will bounce off or break through these levels. Need another indicator to help.
