How far should medical help have been provided in the beginning of her illness?

That's a topic that has not gotten as much attention as it deserves, IMO.

One problem with feeding tubes and other life support is that families and doctors are proscribed from just removing them. The simplest way to keep control of the situation to not hook up the life support in the first place. Problem is that, in the beginning, you are both hopeful and stressed and you don't want to preclude anything that might help so you opt for the full emergency room and life support treatment. Once you have it, your's stuck with it and it's a really big deal to remove it. If we were sufficiently prescient and had sufficient presence of mind, we would not start down that slippery slope. But we are not prescient and no normal human has that much presence of mind.

My father has often told his sisters and me that, should he have some sort of attack in our presence, we should leave and go to a movie so that he'll be dead when we return. We just roll our eyes. But I take his point, I really do. However, I would be utterly incapable of implementing those instructions.
