The simplest way to keep control of the situation to not hook up the life support in the first place. Problem is that, in the beginning, you are both hopeful and stressed and you don't want to preclude anything that might help so you opt for the full emergency room and life support treatment.

my understanding (according to a news report, i'm sorry i do not have a link) is that one of terri schiavo's nurses testified in earlier hearings that her husband ordered the insertion of a feeding tube DESPITE the fact that she could be hand fed.

i personally find that quite relevant as to motive, considering his subsequent assertions that she would not have wanted to be on a feeding tube

why would he order a device, which was unnecessary at the time, that was AGAINST her wishes?
