Asian Woes Could Help
U.S. Stock Performance

By E.S. BROWNING and SARA WEBB
Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

U.S. stocks may sometimes feel tremors, as they did
briefly last week, from market turmoil in Southeast Asia.
But international stock strategists say U.S. markets
actually could gain more than they lose from the Asian
upheaval.

Some big U.S. multinationals that sell products and
services in the region likely will take some form of sales
and profit hit, even if it is minor; stock analysts mention
Coca-Cola, General Electric, Caterpillar and Citicorp.

Perhaps more important, if Asian financial jitters keep
foreign currencies weak, U.S. multinationals with
significant sales in foreign currencies could see their
profits suffer when translated into dollars.

But here's the flip side: Companies that buy goods or
parts assembled in Southeast Asia, such as Compaq
Computer and Wal-Mart Stores, will also pay lower
prices as a result.

What's more, U.S. stocks and bonds could also benefit
from an influx of flight capital from Asia. "Money going
out of these Asian portfolios and looking for a safe haven
will go into the U.S. market," says Robert Hormats, vice
chairman of Goldman Sachs International. He says he
already is seeing signs of such a money flow.
