The balloon model is a bit of an oversimplification. The universe isn't a two dimensional surface curved through a third dimension. It might be a three dimensional space curved through a 4th (or maybe more than just a 4th) physical dimension.

The "surface of the balloon" might be all that there is (no seeing through the "void" because there is no void, not even empty space), or if there is a space outside of the universe as we know it you might have to look in the direction of 4th or higher physical to see anything. So to use the ballon analogy again you are always looking at the surface of the ballon.

The analogy is used more to describe the way all galaxies are moving apart (with some local exceptions, but the universe as a whole is expanding) than it is used to describe the actual physical configuration of the universe.
