I went back to the article and noted that it identified subtle bias in the press. Subtle bias, in my view, is far more dangerous and objectionable than overt bias. The perpetrators hide behind a veil of false objectivity that fools people who don't take the trouble or don't know how to think for themselves. Most problems we have in this country can be traced back to our failure to teach our children to think for themselves, and this is a severe failure indeed. For example, in discussing that Minnesota school massacre I've heard pundits declare that we need to identify troubled kids and give them counseling before they commit atrocities. I hold a different view: I think the normal kids need to be counseled to avoid behaviors that alienate troubled kids and drive them into desperation. Maybe this is an impossible task, but it's a big problem in this country. Conformity is rewarded; non-conformity is punished. Just take a look at the news anchor people on TV -- they look like clones of each other. Makeup, dress, and demeanor or forced into conformity with some arbitrary standard.
