I read Iliad and Odeyssey a couple of years ago, and was amazed at how little we had learnt since....

1 - Our civilization has gained a lot of knowledge since then.

2 - Your confusing the learning ability of individual humans with the expanding knowledge base of a civilization. Even if our civilization has learned nothing since then most of the individuals born since then would have learned a lot.
