THE former chief of financial regulation in Britain has warned that China's economic miracle cannot continue unless that country undertakes painful reforms to its financial system.

Speaking in Sydney yesterday, Sir Howard Davies - now an adviser to the Chinese Government - said the Chinese were well aware of the problems, but it was not certain that they could implement the solution.

"It is possible for the Chinese to achieve these reforms," Sir Howard told the Australian Institute of Company Directors, "but it's a question of yes, if ..."

Sir Howard is the former chief of the UK Financial Service Authority and a director of the London School of Economics.

The Chinese economy has been the engine driving the world economy in the past decade. GDP growth averaged 9 per cent for the past 25 years.
