I've known two people who were paralyzed from the neck down. Both youngish men who were injured in accidents -- one dived into shallow water, one broke his neck in a motorcycle accident.

Both lived at home. Both had parents who were able to devote a lot of resources to them. One in Baton Rouge, one in New Orleans.

I used to visit the one in New Orleans from time to time with a woman who helped take care of him. He had a wide variety of interests, and I have no doubt that all the new computer gizmos that have come out since then have made his life more interesting.

The one in Baton Rouge I only visited once, but my brother in law visited him every week, helping care for him while his parents took a break.

I never heard anybody say that they felt despair or wanted to die.

I think, if I were in their shoes, as long as I could surf the net and read eBooks, I would not despair.
