The latest $81 Billion war supplemental included $582 Million to build the largest U.S. Embassy on the planet.... in Baghdad. Currently, the U.S. military is occupying 4 permanent bases in Iraq and constructing 10 others.

Having embassies and bases is completely different from patroling the streets, securing the airport and attacking insurgents. The US has numerous military bases and quite a nice embassy in Japan, for example, but the US military in Japan doesn't fight the yakuza - that's left to the Japanese police. I have no problem with maintaining embassies and bases in Iraq for decades.

It shouldn't take more than three months to train an Iraqi to police the "oh so dangerous!" road leading to the Baghdad airport. Saddam's been gone for two years, why are US soldiers still doing that job (and accidentally shooting Italian hostage negotiators) instead of Iraqis?
