Dell Set To Take Market Share From HP...

03.24.05, 9:33 AM ET

Standard & Poor's Equity Research said Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) is the best positioned PC vendor to take share in the computer hardware sub-industry, most likely from Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ). The research firm reiterated a "strong buy" rating on Dell and a "hold" rating on HP. Market researcher IDC lowered its global PC unit growth estimate for 2005 to 9.7% from 10.1%, based on the slowing U.S. economic recovery and high oil prices. "We believe these factors are reflected in our 8% to 10% unit growth forecast," S&P Equity Research said. "In addition, we expect modest growth in the first quarter, which is a seasonally slow period for corporate and consumer demand." The research firm said low-cost producer Dell is well situated to profit at a time when pricing pressures are likely to remain intense.
