I'm not sure I helped matters when I spanked. It is true it immediate and memorable. The long term consequences are fear and not necessarily "respect" in the same sense that we respect a great leader like Ghandi or Jesus. If Jesus had smacked his disciples every time they flinched in their belief, rather than administer an alegory, the religion would have been very different.
