The damage done by more recent charges regarding funds for trips abroad remains to be seen. But for the lion's share of Mr. DeLay's supporters in Texas, the ethical charges against the majority leader amount to little more than a partisan witch-hunt by a Democratic district attorney in Austin, Ronnie Earle, and the Democratic leadership in Washington--the not-so-unexpected result of unseating six congressional incumbents.

Its interesting that the DA is a Dem. because from what I uderstand, he has gone after many more Dems than GOPers during his tenure as DA.........three or 4 times as many. But I understand..........the right has tell itself some tall tale to push away the accusations of corruption.

After two abortive efforts by Democrats to block redistricting by fleeing the state and three special legislative sessions, Mr. DeLay's long journey reached the political promised land in 2003--a redistricting plan that changed Texas' congressional delegation from a 17-15 Democratic majority to a 21-11 Republican majority in last fall's election.

That would seem fair until one remembers that TX has done two redistrictings in the 4 years since the 2000 census when most states only do one in a decade. And how come there is no mention that Delay called out federal authorities [Homeland security] to locate TX state officials.......a different misuse of federal funds?

Measured in terms of profligate spending and a malleable ethics process, the Republican majority today is not so different from the Democratic majority it replaced. The ordinary idealism required to transform an opposition minority may not square with the extraordinary exercise of power in a ruling majority.

Huh? They are the worst spenders in US history.

Political figures are rarely as good or as bad--or as simple--as conventional wisdom and the media tend to portray. Tom DeLay is no exception. To retain the loyalty of his Republican colleagues and his district's voters in the future, he'll need to restore some of the ordinariness that distinguished him in the past. </O>

Let me tell you........these last two paragraphs insured that the author has lost all credibility with me. The spending in this GOP Congress has been horrendous and Delay has led the charge. He just cost us a small fortune in the fiasco he pulled over the Schiavo case. Why does the author ignore that travesty?

If this is typical of how you police your political reps in TX, then you deserve what you get.......just keep them away from the rest of us.
