I remember us rounding a dozen or so pigs up in an old granary. My dad and older brothers used sledge hammers and the blunt end of axes to crush their skulls. It was horrific to watch. Chaos and screeching and misses. My oldest brother is a big man, but his face was white as he went about his duties.

It probably sounds barbaric but most of the blows rang true and suffering was only occasional.

Of course, I do not consider such matters when I am sitting down to wonderful pork chops with apple sauce. It is incredible how the mind can lock the doors of memory...

Most modern kids in big cities have no associations between animal and food. They walk into huge stores where packages of meat are lined up for 30 yards and they wonder whether they want lamb, chicken, steak, or pork roast. It is no different than corn flakes or cheerios or raisin bran. Just packages of food.

Yes, Buddhism is a sensitive and sensible path.
