Either you're not following, or you're deliberately missing the logic.

A gun allows an otherwise fairly harmless individual to become a mass murdered. The same 16 year old yielding a knife would not have gotten past the two security guards at the school.

A gun is a mechanism for killing. So is a nuclear bomb. They are similar in that they allow mass killing, and have no purpose other than killing and maiming, whether that be man or animal. Their only difference is their scale (you could argue that guns kill at a higher scale based on the history of their use).

Should the grandfather have been more careful? Could he have prevented this tragedy? What about kids whose parents are law enforcement officers? Are they careful enough?
