JF, Where is the US car industry on hybrids... certainly not leading...

The price of gas in Japan is 3X that of America, due to the fact that Japan has to import 100% of its oil.

It's no wonder Japan is leading the industry in hybrids.

Much of that higher price is due to taxes on the gas, and not because they import 100% of their oil. Its done intentionally to keep imports of oil down. BTW Japan is less dependent on oil than we are.

We import more than 50% of the oil we use. That's a huge trade imbalance. Wouldn't it be smart to follow the Japanese and European model of taxing gas so that people would be discouraged from driving and use that money to subsidize the research for alternative fuels and alternative transport in a more meaningful way?

"What is the role of oil and natural gas in the economy of different countries?

Oil supplies the US with 30% of its energy, 50% for the UK, 10% for Japan, 22% for India and 90% for Nigeria
Natural gas supplies the US with 26% of its energy, 18% for the UK, 4% for India and 3% for Japan."
