Looks like Pakistan will be buying lots of American F-16s and India will be buying more sophisticated F-18s. Senior American officials assured leaders of both countries that the balance of power in South Asia would not be changed. They gave no such assurances about the balance of payments. I shudder to think how many solar powered pumps could be installed for the price of one jet fighter.

Apparently the deal also gives India a limited license to produce these aircraft in India. Are we now getting ready to outsource F-18s too? As part of the package US also agreed to supply nuclear reactors to help meet India's domestic electricity needs.
