Ted, Much of that higher price is due to taxes on the gas, and not because they import 100% of their oil. Its done intentionally to keep imports of oil down.

If true, that still doesn't change what I said, since the need to control the import of oil is born from the fact that they have to import 100% of their oil.

By the way, the statistics you posted don't make sense:

Oil supplies the US with 30% of its energy, 50% for the UK, 10% for Japan, 22% for India and 90% for Nigeria
Natural gas supplies the US with 26% of its energy, 18% for the UK, 4% for India and 3% for Japan."


If oil and natural gas only makes up 13% of Japan's energy needs, then what makes up the other 87%? Coal? Nuclear?

There was a link on the web page you provided, but it was broken, so I couldn't find the original source of that "statistic."
