What happens AFTER the BABY BOOM/BABY BUST combo goes through? After that, SS gets back into savings mode because there's another baby boom generation from the 80s coming through to take care of the baby busters.

Large generations and small generations come and go. If there was a permanent problem like the boom/bust scenario we're looking at currently, we would be seeing a decline in the US population to ZERO. SS is not a ponzi scheme which goes permanently in one direction instead of flowing back and forth.

IRAs, 401Ks, SEP-Iras, life insurance, etc. are not even used fully. If people want private retirement investment outside of SS, it's available everywhere.

The entire point of SS is INSURANCE. Insurance against financial disaster of one kind or another. Insurance is most needed when the risk is highest. With the decline in pensions, with the mobility and insecurity of the job market, with the decline in REAL INCOME for most of the country, the financial risk is greater now. Why wouldn't we want MORE INSURANCE and not less? It's completely illogical.
