Wouldn't it be smart to follow the Japanese and European model of taxing gas so that people would be discouraged from driving and use that money to subsidize the research for alternative fuels and alternative transport in a more meaningful way?

I totally agree and so do the bike shops in Los Angeles!
Just think of it, people biking or hiking if too poor or too stupid to buy or steal a bike. With the rich taking to alternatives and by doing that dropping horse-shit all over the city...

I take it you have never taken a train or bus in LA. I understand.......that's a very unelitist thing to do. What mode of transport do you taken in Munich? Do you dare to go on the Metro? Probably now...huh?

Ted "Il Viaggiatore", you have been to Europe and possibly to Japan and know the differences. Over there you have public transportation systems which are at the best rudimentary in LAX, which was just one example of many.

Huh? Translation please and not "The Traveler" part.
