the Media Extender will be the only presence in the living room.

But you still need it to be connected to the PC somewhere else, right? So unless you're happy hooking up your Media Extender wirelessly with a multi-purpose PC, you still need a dedicated box with windows media center.

Right?

Tivo does have a DirecTV HD version, by the way - but I don't really see the mass-market attraction of HDTV anyway - too expensive for the improvement it offers. Of course, there's a niche group that love it, of course (largely the same folks that might be willing to use a media center PC today), but I don't think the average consumer cares.

Besides, the issue was whether media pcs would give Tivo a run for their money in a couple of years (they're not now)...and in a couple of years, Tivo will probably have more accessible/affordable HD solutions.

and of course, you don't have to pay Tivo's annoying subscription fees with MCE.

Pay for a lifetime subscription, then no subscription fees. Still cheaper than a Windows Media Center PC.
