The fact that the kid was the grandson of a law enforcement officer shows that there are no 'safe' guns. All must be carefully regulated and kept away from children and criminals.


As a comment:
My brother was a policeman for several years and a deputy sherrif for several years after that. I hung out with him and his co-workers quite a lot at that time.

Almost universally they got tired of locking their equipment up after work. Although they all locks and sometimes safes available, they usually left their belt and hat on bedside tables, the floor of the closet, or in a drawer in the living room. Many times it was just left beside the couch in the open. It was a matter of familiarity leading to complacency.
